Franklin County is home to unique year-round experiences, like an encounter with wolves at Wolf Creek Habitat and Rescue, miles of beautiful hiking and biking trails, and fishing in the Whitewater River or Brookville Lake.
Spring, Summer, and Fall are filled with some of the most unique festivals and events in the region, with musical festivals such as Happy Valley Bluegrass Festival and Metamora Music Festival, to cultural events such as Oldenburg’s Freudenfest.
Those looking for an unforgettable shopping experience will find many boutiques, antiques and unique finds in the locally owned shops. Or enjoy a stroll through one of three historic towns and learn about the history of the 19th century homes and businesses with help from one of the self-guided history brochures, available under the Resources tab.

Bluegrass Night at the Opry Barn Schedule
Third Saturdays of the month mean Bluegrass at the Opry Barn. Featuring a variety of regional talents. Doors open at 6:00 and music begins at 6:30 PM. Food from the Blue Umbrella Bistro is available for purchase all evening. Come on out to Indiana’s Canal Town and enjoy the music.

Brookville Lake State Recreation Area offers numerous trails that are used year-round for hiking, including some multi-use trails for hiking and biking.

Metamora, Indiana
Metamora Indiana Historic Canal Town – Shops, Grist Mill, Wooden Aqueduct, Eateries, B&B’s and Trails. Metamora is home to the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site, which includes the Whitewater Canal and Aqueduct. Metamora also has a self-guided historic walking tour. Brochures can be obtained in the Visitors Center next to Grannie’s Cookie Jar & Ice Cream, which is open year-round, seven days a week.

Oldenburg – Village of Spires
The quaint village of Oldenburg, Indiana is home to Sisters of St. Francis Convent, which offers tours by appointment, several shopping and dining options, a brewery, and beautiful scenery perfect for photos.

Salt Creek Ranch
Salt Creek Ranch is open all year long with 700 acres of trail riding with about 100 horses on site.

Whitewater Canal Trail
The Whitewater Canal Trail offers miles of walking, running, and biking trails that follow that old towpath for the Whitewater Canal. Wildlife frequently encountered are deer, turkey, bald eagles, numerous species of birds, rabbits, and squirrels. In addition to wildlife, you can learn about the history of the canal built in the 1830s and visit the original canal locks located along the trails. Some trailheads offer restroom facilities.

Wolf Creek Habitat & Rescue
Wolf Creek Habitat & Rescue is home to over 30 wolves and many fox. Visitors can observe the wolves from a platform over the enclosures or experience an up-close encounter with the wolves. Wolf Creek Habitat is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to care for our resident wolves and educate the public about the importance of these magnificent creatures.

Whitewater Canal State Historic Site
The Whitewater Canal State Historic Site is home to The Metamora Grist Mill, it is just one of the many mills and factories built to utilize the water power of the canal. Built in 1893, the mill is still used to grind cornmeal in the 21st century. Take a trip to the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site and discover the mill’s history, see the nation’s only known wooden aqueduct, and explore the hiking trails.
